Product CMF

CMF Lead — Portable Audio / 2024

GOAL

Evolve Sonos portables with sustainable materials and refined hardware UI, delivering an elevated, outdoor-ready CMF experience while maintaining Sonos’ signature quality and visual cohesion.

Intro

The second-generation updates to Sonos Move and Roam presented an opportunity to evolve both products from the inside out. Alongside significant internal engineering improvements, the programs focused on meaningful CMF updates to the external surfaces. From a CMF perspective, this work centered on transitioning to more sustainable materials and refining the hardware UI in response to customer feedback—ensuring the next generation of portables delivered improved performance, clarity, and a more considered user experience.

Challenge

Evolve the next generation of portable speakers through sustainable material transitions and refined hardware UI, informed by customer feedback and aligned with Sonos’ design language.

Research & Strategy

The CMF strategy was informed primarily by consumer feedback and insight validation through focus groups, helping confirm opportunities for color updates and desired CMF accessories for second-generation portables. This research guided decisions that balanced portfolio alignment and sustainability goals, while prioritizing material efficiency and waste reduction without compromising the product experience.

The CMF strategy reflects evolving portable use cases, with a palette inspired by the tones and textures of the outdoors.

Implementation & Collaboration

  • Partnered with materials strategy and development teams to identify and validate sustainable resin formulations

  • Collaborated with suppliers to achieve accurate resin color matching and quality consistency

  • Worked with compliance teams to conduct cycle and durability testing on material formulations

  • Coordinated with sustainability, quality, and engineering teams to ensure material updates met environmental goals without impacting functionality or performance

Exploration & Prototyping

Final Outcome

The second-generation portables deliver a cohesive, elevated CMF experience that balances sustainability, durability, and outdoor-ready aesthetics. The updated materials and refined hardware UI enhance tactile quality and visual cohesion, resulting in products that feel unmistakably Sonos while meeting new use cases and environmental goals.

Reflection

Success was ultimately defined by simplicity.

This work lived in the details. With the palette established, the challenge became maintaining the quality and nuance of the original color formulas while translating them to a new, more sustainable material system. Achieving that balance required careful refinement across two distinct form factors, where success was ultimately defined by simplicity. If the product feels effortless to the consumer, the underlying complexity of manufacturing, validation, and material transition has been resolved—and that is where this program succeeded.
