Sonos Amp Multi
Product CMF & Design Strategy
CMF Lead — Professional/ 2026
Intro
The Sonos Amp Multi brings high-performance, multi-zone architectural audio into a clean, system-driven footprint. Designed for professional integration, it adapts the core Sonos design language into a high-density, rack-ready chassis that balances utility and performance with a sense of understated luxury. By pairing gallium nitride thermal efficiency with a fanless, passively cooled architecture, the program brings structure and clarity to complex custom installations, delivering a refined hardware system built explicitly for real-world deployment.
GOAL
The goal was to build a performance-driven CMF strategy tailored for the professional installer rather than the traditional end-user. Even when tucked away in dark, dusty rack enclosures packed with cables, excellent design is still fully on display through meticulous detail and consideration for what matters most—bringing true Sonos design principles and aesthetics into a space that demands absolute utility.
Challenge
For the Sonos Amp Multi, the challenge was shifting the visual narrative from raw commercial equipment to refined architectural hardware, ensuring the product feels purposeful even when hidden from view. The design had to balance rugged custom-install utility with a sense of understated luxury—introducing specialized scuff-resistant finishes, intricate passive cooling integration, and high-contrast legibility without compromising the material clarity and restraint central to Sonos’ design ethos.
Research & Strategy
The CMF strategy for the Sonos Amp Multi moves away from raw industrial gear toward refined architectural hardware. Since these units live in tight AV racks, I looked closely at how materials handle metal-on-metal installation wear while keeping that subtle Sonos elegance. The work balanced micro-level surface performance—like managing ambient glare on complex hardware interfaces—with the raw physical durability required for high-volume trade handling.
The CMF strategy centers on Sonos’ core SKU: Black for audio.

Final Outcome
Delivered a harmonized CMF language combining durable professional surfaces with a refined, understated luxury. It stands out as an intuitive, tool-grade piece of hardware for professional installers while remaining unmistakably Sonos.
Reflection
The Amp Multi program was really an exercise in material desirability. All of our design decisions were driven completely by the needs of the consumer—and in this case, that consumer is an installer. While aesthetics matter, things like functionality, speed of setup, and ease of access were the real drivers. In the end, we delivered on what mattered most to the professional installer, and the icing on the cake was showing that we could also make it look really, really good.
